Outreach Methodologies

There’s one key element missing from most outreach and educational programs … excitement. At MYC, children are not forced to learn “our” way, but choose to learn from a collective of ideas. MYC counselors and volunteers simply provide real life examples and information in an entertaining format based on the child’s preferences. If one child prefers video games over drugs, that’s an advantage. Instead of deterring the child from gaming, MYC will provide facilities for children to play video games recreationally and competitively as well as explore the various aspects of gaming and possible related career objectives in the video game industry. This is just one example of how MYC will tailor individual and group programs while integrating excitement into the learning process.

Several counselors will play a key role in helping children learn as well as cope with school, suicide, drugs, sex, peer pressure and many of the hurdles children face growing up. With group sessions, confidential 1-on-1 counseling, telephone and email, children will have many options available to them.

In addition to customized counseling and training programs, the MYC will have many modular and themed areas where children can take advantage of resources they may not have immediately available to them anywhere else.  Planned areas include:

  • Technology Room - Children can enhance their computer skills, research homework assignments as well as enjoy educational video games to take their mind off any stresses.

  • Art Studio - From sketch pads to canvases, children will be able to express themselves visually with the latest tools and art resources only available to professional artists today.

  • Music Studio - Children will be able to log time in the sound booth, mix tracks as well as produce their very own CD in the MYC Music Studio.

  • Dance Studio - Whether it’s ballet or break dancing, the MYC Dance Studio will accommodate all dance forms.

  • Exercise Room – From diet training to weight lifting, children will have a place to go fight obesity and stress.

  • The Study – Filled with a small library and lounge chairs, children will be able to grab a book, study for a test or simply relax in a quite room.

For each of these areas, we are actively seeking volunteers that specialize in these fields. For example, in the Art Studio, MYC will feature art instructors and professional artists from various walks of life. These professionals will come in once or on a pre-determined schedule for workshops that provide children with real world experience and hands-on training.

After school and weekend events will also be common place. From art shows to skateboarding competitions, the MYC will provide an exciting and fun environment for children to express themselves positively and enjoy their childhood.
